These last two weeks, during the symposium, we have heard presentations from the Summer of 2023 Protocol Improvement Grant and Protocol Orienteering Grant recipients. We also had an amazing crop of creative works developed by the PILL projects. This all builds on the work of the 2024 cohort of Summer of Protocols that produced the Protocol Kit, whose last installment was just released.
This body of work is rich with insights and inspiration and we want to make space for all of the participants from both years and all those who are interested in the work to have space to connect and dialogue together about protocols and their power in the world.
To this end we are hosting an Open Space Technology Unconference facilitated by one of our 2024 SoP Grantees, Kaliya Young . She has been facilitating Open Space Technology at the Internet Identity Workshop that she co-founded in 2005 to innovate digital identity protocols.
To support folks having the opportunity from around the globe to participate we will have two “opening circles” one friendly for Asian time zones and one friendly for European and North American time zones. We will host a closing circle at 14:00 UTC, Saturday, September 28.
We will all gather together for the opening to co-create the agenda together. We will be using social layer as our “agenda wall”. We will have three different break out rooms happening at the same time and focus the energy of sessions in the first 5 hours of time after the opening circle with the sessions running on the hour.
Open Space Technology is a format that islexible and supports a range of formats within it:
-
One can ask a question that one is pondering and hopes that others might have answers for it
-
One can put forward a issue you want to discuss with peers
-
One can share a learning or insight or new idea with folks presenting slides. This works well as a starter and it is advisable to not present for the full hour make space for those gathered to discuss talk about it after.
-
One could put forward a game to play or exercise to do like meditate
The format can hold what we ask it to. As the convener of a session you pick when and where it happens (you schedule it in Social Layer during the opening circle). You agree to be at that time/space and invite others who share an interest/passion in what you do to be there. It isn’t a contest to see who can get the most people there or who has the most popular session but instead an opportunity to make space for what you care about and invite others to find you.
We will use Open Space Technology to guide our time together. Kaliya will walk through the format and how it works and facilitate agenda concretion. You can find the principles of Open Space Technology here.
We will also be encouraging folks to take notes in the sessions so we get a sense of what happens and also have the ability to share with each other more information about them. We encourage this in a medium of your choice - google docs, ether pad, notion.
Also, remember to RSVP for the closing circle.
